Why Biodiversity Risk Is Location-Specific

Biodiversity depends on ecological context, so nature-related assessment must retain the particularity of place.

Biodiversity is not distributed evenly. Species, habitats, ecological functions and pressures vary across landscapes and through time. This makes location central to understanding nature-related dependencies, impacts and risks.

A generic activity label cannot fully describe biodiversity significance. The same land use may intersect a sensitive habitat in one location and a heavily modified environment in another. Local ecological condition and connectivity can matter as much as the size of an affected area.

Screening and assessment are different

Spatial datasets can help identify where assets or activities overlap areas of potential importance. This is valuable for screening and prioritization, but global datasets do not replace site-level knowledge or ecological assessment.

Good screening combines multiple signals and states its limitations. Protected areas, species ranges, ecosystem condition and water-related features each offer a partial view. Their resolution, date and intended use affect what can be inferred.

Location-specific analysis is therefore a way to direct attention responsibly. It helps identify where better evidence is most needed and where management choices may require greater care.
